

Ellen Kumle, 74, of Springfield, passed away at 10:20 a.m. on Monday, February 25, 2019, at her residence. Ellen was born on May 15, 1944, at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, LA, the daughter of Lt. Col Howard Anthony and Clara Donelan Hayes. She married Roger William Kumle on August 17, 1968, at St. Joseph Church in Springfield; he preceded her in death on August 26, 2018. Ellen graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and attended Springfield Junior College. She earned her bachelors degree from WIU in Macomb. Ellen was employed at Rochester School District where she taught high school algebra and geometry and also served as the monitor for the Brain Trust program. While at Rochester, she was the recipient of numerous teaching awards. She was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church and the Lake Press Club. Ellen loved watching Fox News, Jeopardy, and science fiction shows, especially Star Trek. She also enjoyed reading and walking at the mall. She was also preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her children, Nicole Kumle of Nashville, TN and Brian Kumle of Austin, TX; siblings, John (wife, Neva) Hayes, Tim (wife, Felicia) Hayes, David Hayes, Howard (wife, Barb) Hayes, and Dennis (wife, Linda) Hayes; brother-in-law, Tom (wife, Judy) Kumle; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2019, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 700 E. Spruce St., Chatham with Fr. John Nolan, celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Marys Cemetery in New Berlin. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Department 142.
