Gene was born on June 4, 1932, in Springfield, Illinois, the son of John P. and Genevieve M. (Harney) Walsh.
Gene attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and graduated from Athens High School in 1950. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War (1951-1955) and later reenlisted for active duty (1960-1964). He retired from the Naval Reserve after 20 years of service. He received medals and honors for Good Conduct, Japanese Occupation, Chinese Service, and Korean Service. He was employed as a welder at Fiat-Allis for over 30 years before his retirement in 1985. While at Fiat-Allis, he served as a Union Steward and Bargain Committee Chairman. Gene also was a VFW Post Commander of Post 5302.
Gene married Betty Jo Gray on November 26, 1955, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Springfield, Illinois with Father Brockmeier officiating. During their 70 years of marriage, they celebrated the birth of six children (Kathleen, Maureen, Karen, Gene, Betty, and Tom), nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Gene participated in Perpetual Adoration for over 20 years at John Vianney Church in Sherman, and he was a member of Holy Family Church in Athens for over 60 years. He also was a past member of the Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club, Prop Club, and numerous bowling and softball leagues. He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Cardinals, and the Illini. One of his most memorable experiences was visiting his family’s ancestral home in Kiltimagh, Mayo County, Ireland.
Gene is survived by his loving wife Betty Jo, daughters Kathy (Fred) Knope, Maureen Gochanour, Betty (Jim) Thomas, sons Gene Walsh and Tom (Tammy) Walsh, brother Robert (Sarah) Walsh, sister-in-law Mary Katherine Kane, nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and countless cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Gene was preceded by his parents John & Genevieve (Harney) Walsh, daughter Karen VonBehren, brothers and sister-in-law Jack and Jeannie (McVary) Walsh and Thomas and Betty Rose (Ramey) Walsh, sister Mary Francis Walsh, and sister and brother-in-law Genevieve and William Lamkey, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut St., Springfield, with Fr. Michael Friedel, celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided.
