Frederick J. Hammond, Sr.

Frederick “Fred” J. Hammond, Sr., 67, of Springfield died at 5:38 a.m. on Tuesday, January 1, 2008. Fred was born October 14, 1940 in Springfield, the son of Fred H. and Mildred Harford Hammond. He married Alberta Melton on July 23, 1960. Fred was a graduate of Feitshans High School and for thirty-four years was a self-employed carpet installer. He was a life long member of the community and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #4361, and the Blue Ridge Club. He enjoyed every opportunity he had to be with his grandkids; including going fishing, going to the movies, watching their sporting events, and making up songs in the truck driving down the highway. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife: Alberta L, Hammond of Springfield; one son: Fred J. (wife, Coleen) Hammond, Jr. of Springfield; two daughters: Vickie Lynn (husband, Dave) Bertetto of Rochester and Rachel L. (husband, Derek) Smith of Pawnee; seven grandchildren: Mitchell A. Walker, Ashley L. Walker, Kara A. Bertetto, Zach C. Epkins, Seth J. T. Hammond, Bayleigh A. Hammond and Devin S. Smith; one brother: William H. (wife, Diann) Hammond of Pawnee; niece: Holly (husband, Chub) Hough of Pawnee; two nephews: William (wife, Julie) Hammond of Chatham and Todd (wife, Cathy) Hammond of Springfield. Family will receive friends from 5 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. A private family funeral ceremony will be held at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Freeman officiant. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
