Born on August 16, 1947, in Lowder, Illinois, Gary was the son of Robert and Velma (Large) Swaggerty. He married Mary Siefert on September 24, 1999, in Springfield, and together they shared many wonderful years.
Gary co-owned and operated Jerry & Gary’s Auto Salvage until his retirement in 2010. He was an avid golfer and traveler who also loved watching NASCAR—especially when his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt, was on the track.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Gary Swaggerty, Jr.; his stepson, Jason Swift; his brothers, Ray, Bob, Freddy, and Jim Swaggerty; and his sisters, Linda Edge and Betty Swaggerty.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Swaggerty of Springfield; his son, Kenneth M. (Donna) Swaggerty of Springfield; stepsons, Zachary (Mark) Stairwalt of California and Joshua Stairwalt of Nevada; stepdaughter, Megan (Andrew) Stairwalt of Utah; daughter-in-law, Laura Swaggerty of Springfield; grandchildren, Gary Swaggerty III, Lauren McGrath, Gracy and Mary K. Swaggerty, Brandon and Tyler Swift, Samantha Stairwalt, Serenity Files, and Hannah Stairwalt; six great-grandchildren; his brother, Earl (Mari) Swaggerty of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
