

George was born on July 7, 1938, in Petersburg, the son of Oliver and Opal (Carter) Armstrong. George married Linda Taylor in February of 1986, in Springfield.
George graduated from Feitshans High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves. George worked as a cement finisher by trade with Armstrong Concrete until retirement. He was a member of the Tyrian Masonic Lodge No. 333 and the Cement Finisher Union. George loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and golfing. He was an avid Chicago Bears and L.A. Dodgers fan, and coached/refereed his grandkids’ golden gloves team.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Donald, Vernon, Glenn, Albert, and Eddie Armstrong.
George is survived by his wife, Linda Armstrong of Springfield; children, Dawn (Mark) Pharis of Lincoln, George “Andy” (Judy) Armstrong of Chatham, Jim (Mary) Ely of Springfield, Theresa (Pete, deceased) Warren of Springfield, Michelle Ely of Springfield, and Lance (Mindy) Ely of Sherman; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Herschel (Maryellen) Armstrong of Springfield; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and beloved dog, Bentley.
Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home - Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield. A Ceremony will follow at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. George Nellikunnel officiating. Visitation will begin with Masonic Rights provided by the Tyrian Lodge No. 333 of Rochester. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors provided by the Menard County Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
