

Dr. Glennon H. Paul, 83, a beloved family physician who cared for so many in Springfield, passed away Monday, May 12, 2025, at home with his family by his side. He was a dedicated physician for over five decades. Dr. Paul loved his family, loved people, loved knowledge and medicine, and had an unwavering commitment to his patients. His life of serving others will have a lasting impact on the community.
Glennon’s love of science, medicine, and business started at a very young age. He began selling newspapers in South St. Louis before he started working at a local pharmacy at the age of 10. After high school, he graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and then attended medical school at the University of Missouri. His medical internship was at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Seattle, WA, followed by residency at the University of Washington for Internal Medicine. He then completed additional training with a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology from the University of Washington. He was board certified in both Internal Medicine and in Allergy and Immunology.
He was a born leader who started his public service as a medical officer in the United States Coast Guard from 1967-1973 for the U.S. Public Health Service, where he also served as the Director of Ambulatory Medicine and the Director of Dermatology and Allergy. Later, he served in many civilian leadership positions, including the Medical Director of Ventilator Management and the Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy, both at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. Dr. Paul was also a teacher and clinical assistant professor at SIU School of Medicine. He authored several books and patented a sinus screener device.
In 1974, he continued his love of medicine and business by starting the Central Illinois Allergy and Respiratory Center. He developed a highly specialized clinic that was dedicated to helping people feel better and breathe better, and he served the people of Springfield, IL, and the surrounding areas for over 50 years. He worked tirelessly many hours a day, 7 days a week, and was on call every day for his patients. He didn’t just provide medical care to improve lives, he took a genuine personal interest in helping those around him to become better people. He truly loved his staff and all his patients. Dr. Paul retired in May of 2016, at the age of 75. His practice was a legacy in the medical community. He not only treated patients, but loved them as well.
Glennon lived life to the fullest. He was a humble and simple man, nothing fancy or flashy. He was always on the go, quick thinking and full of wisdom. He lived a life of hard work, had high expectations, and had his way of doing things. He loved to learn, he loved to read, he loved to laugh and joke, and he always wanted to know everyone’s story. He had a heart of generosity and was known to help many when he heard of their hardships, and he would invest in people’s lives. He loved God, He loved his wife, Jeanette, and he loved his big family. Everything he worked for was for them.
Glennon was born on July 14, 1941, in St. Louis, MO, to Charles and Cora (Strebler) Paul. He was the youngest of five children. He married Jeanette Schroeder on April 24, 1965. They just celebrated 60 years together. They had 11 children, 27 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Paul of Springfield; 10 children, Charlie (Mia) Paul of Pleasant Plains, Shelly (Dave) Graupner of Hilton Head SC, Marty (Jennifer) Paul of Springfield, Al (Amanda) Paul of Hilton Head, SC, Sherry (Tim) Ungashick of Boerne, TX, Barbie (Jeff) Sauer of Springfield, Andrew Paul of Loveland, OH, Sally (Chris) Maender of Springfield, Danny (Sherri) Paul of Pleasant Plains, and Adam (Dominique) Paul of Lake Forest, CA; 27 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Sr. Barbara Paul, OP, of Sparkill, NY; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, David, Danny, and Sharon Paul; and daughter, Ginger Paul.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos Ave., Springfield, with Rev. Fredrick Chima Mbiere, celebrant. A private burial will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery, with military honors provided.
