

Ila Jean graduated from Springfield High School in 1936 and Brown’s Business College in 1937. On May 29, 1940 she married George Martin Rowland also of Springfield. They enjoyed 34 years together until George’s death in 1974.
Ila jean married a long-term family friend, J. Willard Tobin on March 24, 1976. They had 11 happy years together until Willard’s death in 1987.
Ila Jean served as Treasurer and Financial Secretary of Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church in the 1950’s and 1960’s. She also served as Assistant Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer of the State Chapter of PEO as well as Presidents of Chapter DC of PEO in Springfield. Her volunteer activities included serving as Treasurer and subsequently as President of the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer’s Association, an organizing member of the Third Day Circle of the King’s Daughters, a leader of a Mariner Troup of the Girl Scouts, and President of the Illini’s Women’s Golf Association. She was a member of the Sangamo Club and a former member of Island Bay Yacht Club.
Ila Jean is survived by a son, Randall G. Rowland, and a daughter-in-law Diane S. Rowland of Indianapolis, Indiana along with three grandsons, Michael, Mark and David Rowland, a brother and sister-in-law Dwayne and Charlotte Colson, two step daughters, Lynn Tobin Jackson and Ann Tobin Hart, eight step grandchildren, and eight grandnieces and nephews.
Friends and family may call at the first United Methodist Church- West at 2941 S. Koke Mill Road from 9:30 to 11:00am on Saturday, February 23, 2008. A memorial service will be conducted by the Dr. Roger Ross at 11:00am at the church. A luncheon reception will follow the memorial service in Atrium 2.
