

James Norman Cranwill, 89, of Springfield, passed away at 7:11 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Raulerson Hospital in Florida. James was born on May 20, 1925 in Manito, Illinois, a son of Alexander Robert and Mattie J. McKay Cranwill. He married Carolyn Pickett on July 23, 1966 in Havana, IL. James graduated from Manito Community High School in 1942; he later attended Bradley University where he graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration in 1948. James served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a Yeoman 3rd Class. James worked at Franklin Life Company from 1950 to 1987. He helped install the first large scale computer in 1952, managed people and learned programming. He was a member of the Elks Club, American Legion Post 32 and was a past member of the Moose Lodge 2417 and the Wing and Feather Hunting Club. He enjoyed inventing, fishing, and hunting. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Patrick Cranwill, Joseph F. Cranwill, Robert (Tom) Cranwill, Allen B. Cranwill, and Jack H. Cranwill; and two sisters, Beverly Cranwill and Mary F. Neikirk. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Cranwill of Springfield; three sons, Thomas Trent (wife, Colene) Cranwill of Kansas City, MO, Joseph H. (wife, Amy) Cranwill of Chatham, and James J. (wife, Jennifer) Cranwill of Springfield; three daughters, Kellie (husband, Rodger) Cookson of Springfield, Karen J. (husband, Donald) Little of Manhattan, KS, and Julie G. (husband, Harold) Power of Makanda, IL; thirteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Don N. (wife, Joann) of Pekin; several nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 5, 2014 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Rev. Paul Rose, officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Department of Defense and the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
