James Robert "Bob" Kornfeld, 96, of Springfield, passed away at 2:05 a.m. on Monday, October 27, 2014 at Heritage Manor. James was born on May 24, 1918 in Springfield, a son of August and Ethel Rebecca Parcel Kornfeld. He married Geraldine Ann Handley on January 24, 1948 in St. Agnes Church in Springfield. James attended Sacred Heart Grade School and Feitshans High School in Springfield. He enlisted in the United States Army; serving in World War II from 1941 to 1945, where he earned three overseas service bars, including the European-African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, and the American Defense Service Medal. James worked for Charles C. Thomas Publishing Company for 36 years as the supervisor of the printing department. He later worked for Robert Bell Printing Company for 10 years as a pressman. After retirement he worked at Lincoln Greens Golf Course for 11 years in maintenance. James was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 437 and a member of Church of the Little Flower. James was the kind of man that stepped up to the plate from the time he was 16 at the loss of his father and took over the family. He loved his golf and fishing, and could glide in the water like a swan. He saved his girls from huge spiders during teenage years. James loved long car rides and country air. He worked hard and came home to three females, which couldn't be easy. He was proud of his army days and could talk forever about them. James enjoyed his job at Charles C. Thomas and made the role enjoyable for everyone with his boyish pranks. He spent his retirement years at Lincoln Greens doing odd jobs and taking care of the club house cats. James was liked by everyone and will sadly be missed by his family and all. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, George, Earl, Dick, Kornfeld; and one sister, Mary Jean Bartling. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine A. Kornfeld of Springfield; two daughters, Barbara (husband, Michael) Mangan of Makanda and Patricia Kornfeld of Chatham; four grandchildren, Mark (wife, Rhonda) Mangan of Kansas, Brian (wife, Lisa) Guerro of Colorado, Maggie Mangan Eubanks of Indonesia and Michael Mangan, Jr. of California; one brother, John Kornfeld; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved dogs, Georgie and Gracie.
