He was born in LaSalle, IL, on March 20, 1957, the son of James and Shirley (Gerrard) Swartz.
James graduated from LaSalle-Peru Township High School with the class of 1975. He went on to work for Unimin and later City Garage in Springfield, IL. James enjoyed cooking meals for family and friends, watching TV shows, and working out- especially swimming at Nelson Center. He was eccentric, a straight shooter, and had a great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, John Swartz.
James is survived by his son, Nicholas Swartz of Petersburg; daughters, April Swartz and Alissa Swartz-Brewer, both of Columbus; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Suzie Swartz of LaSalle; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
The family is being served by Butler Funeral Home- Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.
