

James W. "Bill" Daugherty, 81, of Springfield, passed away at 5:31 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center. Bill was born March 5, 1936 in Metcalf, IL, the son of James B. and Alberta (Tutwiler) Daugherty. He married Mary Culp on June 7, 1959 at Sidell Methodist Church in Sidell, IL. In 1954, Bill graduated from Sidell High School. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1958, where he participated in the ROTC program. Bill proudly served our country in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Benning, GA, and later served in the Reserves, where he reached the rank of Captain at the time of discharge. Bill was well known in the construction industry and had most recently worked for Michael Von Behren Builder, Inc. Prior to that, he was employed with Illini Pella Window Company and Vredenburgh Lumber Company. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served on various committees and in several different roles within the church. He was also a member of Blue Ridge Boat Club and a charter member of the evening Lions Club. Bill enjoyed volunteering and had served as a Land of Lincoln Honor Flight Guardian, assisted with Meals on Wheels, and organized his high school class reunions. He enjoyed boating, computers, history and spending time with his family and friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and sister-in-law, Yvonne Culp Knepp. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Springfield; daughter, Colleen (John) Hepner of Arlington Heights, IL; son, Lee (Barbara Reuther) Daugherty of Springfield, IL; two grandsons, Scott and Michael Hepner of Chicago; sister-in-law, Kathy McCabe; brother-in-law, Don (Suzanne) Knepp; two nephews; one niece; and several cousins. Graveside Ceremony: 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Hoult Cemetery in Chrisman, IL. A service celebrating Bills life will also be held at a later date.
