Jim Haertel

James W. "Jim" Haertel, 61, of Springfield, died at 9:42 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at St. John's Hospice. Jim was born March 13, 1951 in Dundee, the son of Walter and Hildegard (Reko) Haertel. He married Jane Conley on June 20, 1998 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Chatham. Jim graduated from Dundee Community High School in 1969 and earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He worked for the State of Illinois at Health and Family Services, where he assisted in the writing of Medicaid policies for more than 30 years before retiring in 2006. He was the owner of Jim Haertel Consulting, Co. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and enjoyed painting, playing the guitar, photography, and being with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-son, Jimmy Cusack; and sister, Suzie Salmon. He is survived by his wife, Jane (Conley Cusack) Haertel of Springfield; step-children, Julie Ann (husband, Terry) Franklin of Greenview, John (wife, Chris) Cusack of Washington, OR, and Jennifer Cusack of Portland, OR; six step-grandchildren, Caitlin and Jacob Teegardin, Erica Franklin, and Justine, Peyton, and Alex Cusack; sister, Cindy (husband, Don) Totter of Gurnee; three nieces, Mindy (Moore Salmon)(husband, John) Easler, Leigh-Erin (Moore Salmon) (husband, Ed) Kensicki, and Kim (husband, Ryan) Giovannini; one nephew, Aaron Totter; and one great-niece, Almea Giovannini. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Memorial Ceremony: 1:15 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Revs. Stan Summers and Don Winter officiating.
