

She was born on May 15, 1940, in Petersburg, IL, the daughter of Robert W. and Frances (Eckhoff) Garrett. Joan married Walter J. Hoyt, Jr., on September 8, 2004. He preceded her in death, on January 18, 2025.
Joan graduated from Petersburg High School in 1958. She went on to work as a licensed practical nurse for St. John’s Hospital for 30 years. After retirement, Joan was a dedicated volunteer at Prairie Heart Institute and the Senior Center for Meals on Wheels. She was also a committed volunteer for Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach and helped provide medical supplies and equipment to underserved areas around the world. She worshipped at Koke Mill Christian Church. Joan enjoyed walking long distances for exercise, bicycling, crocheting, listening to books on tape and Christian music, participating in the visually impaired friendship group, tending to plants and flowers, feeding and watching birds, and making the areas she lived in more beautiful in appearance and in kindness. She was known as honest, trustworthy, hard-working and sacrificial for her family, nurturing, tender-hearted, and compassionate.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Alice Witherell and Emma Johnstone; brothers, Robert, Gene, and John Garrett; and grandchild, Kendra Monts.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Frances Ingram and Charlene (Terry) Troxell; grandchildren, Shante’ Achas Kee, Jake Achas, and Joshua, Chris, and Christian Monts; great-grandchildren, Carson, Gleason, Abigail, Amelia, Xander, Jameson, Charlie, Le’la, Allen, Hunter, Haven, Adeline, Daryl, Levi, Ezra, Trent, Emily, and Briar; and siblings, Vernon Garrett of Michigan, Linda Livadas of California, and Thomas (Doris) Garrett of Springfield.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center, following services.
Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield, followed by the Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Stan Summers officiating.
A private Graveside Ceremony will be held at Rosehill Cemetery in Petersburg, IL.
