

John Richard "Dick" Atteberry, 91, of Springfield died at 4:20 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Springfield. He was born January 11, 1918 in Jefferson City, MO the son of LeRoy and Ruth Carroll Atteberry. He was raised at Children's Home in Alton, IL from age 9 until age 15. He learned the meat cutting trade at St. James Trade School in Riverton, IL during ages 15-18. At age 23 he enlisted into the Army Air Corps. He married Dorothy Mae Lampe in 1947 in Fort Thomas, KY. Mr. Atteberry was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII and a union meat cutter and meat department manager at A & P Food Stores from 1950 until its closure in 1981. He then worked from 1982 through 1991 for the State of Illinois Department of Revenue and then the Department of Agriculture. He worked from 1992 until 1997 for Springfield Township Tax Assessor's Office. He was the Republican Precinct Committeeman for Springfield Township, Precinct 9 from 1980 through 1997 and also served on the board for North Side Fire Protection District from 1987 through 2004. Dick was also a life-long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Springfield. He was preceded in death by his half-brother, Carl Atteberry. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy; three sons, Mike (wife, Bette) of Athens, Dan of Springfield, and Tom (wife, Michelle) of Kansas City, MO; four grandchildren, John (wife, Tracy Lynn) Atteberry of Bloomington, Lindsay (husband, Justin) Ward of Pawnee, Tracy (husband, Gary) Northrip of Brumley, MO, and Gracie Atteberry of Kansas City, MO; five great-grandchildren, Marissa and Nicholas Atteberry, Ian and Noah Northrip and Avery Ward; one brother, Bill of Hermando, MS; two sisters, Agnes Chrans of Springfield and Armenda Lindsay of St. Petersburg, FL; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1345 N. 6th St., Springfield with Rev. Msgr. Thomas P. Holinga, V.F., celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors.
