John "Jack" L. Burgess

John "Jack" L. Burgess, 75, of Springfield, passed away at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at St. John's Hospice. Jack was born June 30, 1940 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Herschel and Gladys London Burgess. He married Patricia Campbell on March 6, 2010 in Quincy. Jack was a graduate of Albion High School and received his bachelor's and master's from SIU. He began his career in Springfield, Illinois, with the American Tuberculosis Association and later the American Heart Association. He went on to work as an insurance broker for AIG and specialized in creating programs to meet the special needs of associations. Jack was a member of First United Methodist Church and enjoyed golf, writing, history, architecture, reading, and old black and white movies. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Nancy Burgess; and one brother, William Burgess. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Burgess of Springfield; four sons, Brad Burgess of Seattle, WA, Paul (wife, Jenny) Burgess of Bellevue, WA, Jay (wife, Patricia) Burgess of Columbus, NC, and Robert J. Campbell of Quincy; two daughters, DeDe (husband, Harlan) Murphy of Farmersville and Angie (husband, Todd) Sowle of Springfield; thirteen grandchildren, Austin and Jordan Mudd, Sydney and Sophia Sowle, Adam and Anne Murphy, Sean and Shannon McDonald, Darden, Ben, Emily, Mary and Charlie Burgess, and Richard (wife, Angie) Baskins, Krystle (husband, Dusty) MacIsaac; four great-grandchildren, KayLynn, Emilee, Rylee and JuleeAnn MacIsaac; one brother-in-law, Ken (wife, Lois) Eels; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friends, Arlene and Bill Sowle. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Private family ceremonies were held.
