

John S. Crain, 65 of Springfield, died Saturday, November 11, 2006 at his home. He was born on March 27, 1941 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Robert M. and Beata Sebald Crain. He married Sheila T. Froeter in 1970. Mr. Crain attended the University of Michigan. He graduated from St. Louis University with a Bachelor’s Degree in History in 1968. He did post-graduate work at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale. Mr. Crain was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He served during the Vietnam War from 1962 to 1966 as an accounting and finance specialist at Yokota AFB, Japan and Scott AFB in Illinois. Mr. Crain worked for the State of Illinois for twenty-nine and a half years, serving as a fiscal officer in the Department of Corrections, Comptroller’s Office, Secretary of State’s Office and the Office of the Attorney General. After retirement, Mr. Crain was the baker for Café Andiamo in downtown Springfield from 2002 to 2004. He was also an Adjunct Instructor in Bread Baking at Lincoln Land Community College. Mr. Crain was a member of both Church of the Little Flower and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He had been active in the Rite of Christian Initiation Program and sponsored several others into the Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Sheila Crain of Springfield; one son: Joshua (wife, Rachel) Crain of Napa, CA; one daughter: Sarah Crain of Carbondale; one sister: Barbara Crain of St. Louis, MO; one brother: William (wife, Leila) Crain of Centralia and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1345 N. 6th St., Springfield. A Prayer Service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, with Rev. Msgr. Thomas P. Holinga celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will perform Military Honors.
