Joseph E. Roberts

Joe was born on September 8, 1936, in Jacksonville, the son of Joseph A. and Eleanor Brodmarkle Roberts. He married Lavina L. Beneky on October 8, 1955, at St. Joseph’s Church; she preceded him in death on October 23, 2019.

Joe retired from the IL Secretary of State office with 23 years of service as building manager. He previously worked at Sangamo Electric for 18 years. Joe was a Springfield Township Trustee, Town Clerk, Chief of Police in Grandview, and a Precinct Committeeman for 30 years. He was the Chief of Security and Pit Steward at Springfield Speedway for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joanne Trago; daughter- in- law, Debra Roberts; and granddaughter, Anna Marie Roberts.

He is survived by his sons, Joseph L. Roberts of Springfield and Derek (wife, Laura) Roberts of Springfield; one daughter, Nancy (husband, Ron) Standridge of Springfield; grandsons, Joseph V. Roberts, Jeremy, Jared, and Justin Standridge, and Sean and Ryan Roberts; granddaughter, Alicia Roberts; great-grandsons, Devin Moore, Joseph I. Roberts, and Kolby Standridge; and great-granddaughters, Anna Roberts, Jaycie Standridge, and Vivian Standridge.

Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.

Memorial Gathering and Memorial Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. on Monday, June 20, 2022, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield. A Memorial Ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Kevin J. Mann, S.J.C. officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
