

He was born July 23, 1922 in Chicago the son of Chauncey C. and Constance Rood Maher. He married Ann McKenzie in 1943 and she preceded him in death in 1993. He married Sharon McCormack in 1995.
Dr. Maher was agraduate of the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed both his undergraduate and Medical degrees in six years graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1945. After serving two years in the Navy he returned to Chicago to do his residency at the University of Chicago. Afterwards he moved to Ogden, Utah where he lived and practiced medicine until 1957 wher he moved to Springfield going into private practice with Dr. Richard Allyn in internal medicine. Dr. Maher joined Memorial Hospital's Renal Unit in 1972. He was among the elite group of physicians who made this Southern Illinois School of Medicine unit a success.
Dr. Maher was an artist, hunter and avid fisherman as well as a devoted husband and father. He will be missed by his family and friends as well as innumerable patients and colleagues by whom he was highly regarded.
He is survived by his wife,Sharon; sons, Chauncey(wife, Kathleen) C. Maher,III of Springfield, Peter Maher of Carbondale and Benjamin Maher of Honolulu,HI.; daughters, Nancy M. Wilson and Mary M. Lindquist both of Portland,OR.; stepson Greg Ossing and his daughter Sarah; sister, Barbara Mills of Philadelphia; brother, David Maher of Chicago; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The family is being served by Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel where friends may call Thursday Dec. 7, 2006 from 4 to 7:00pm with a memorial service at 6:00pm with Rabbi Michael Datz officiating.
