

He was born on June 29, 1925 in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Saul and Helen (Greenberg) Shae. He married Zena Brown on Dec. 20, 1953 in Decatur, IL and she survives.
Dr. Shae was an optometrist and owned his own practices in Pana, IL, Decatur, IL and in Springfield from 1965 until his retirement in 1995. He graduated from Miami University of Ohio and finished his professional education at Northern Illinois College of Optometry. Dr. Shae served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Lion’s Club, the Sangamo Club, and the Eagle’s Club in Springfield. Dr. Shae was also a member of Temple B’rith Sholom in Springfield. He was active in amateur theater in both Decatur and Springfield, and was an avid duplicate bridge player. He was dedicated to his wife of 57 years, his family, and his patients.
Besides his wife Zena, he is survived by 3 children, Laura Loring of San Diego, CA, Gary (wife Pat) Shae of Urbana, IL, and Richard (wife Kate) of Melbourne, Australia, a brother Marvin “Mickey” (wife Peg) Shae of Decatur, IL, and 2 grandchildren, Benjamin Shae and Amanda Shae, both of Dallas, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen, Springfield, IL 62703 where memorial services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 at 10:30 am. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until time of the memorial service. Rabbi Michael Datz will officiate.
Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and private inurnment will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Temple B’rith Sholom.
