My deepest condolences to Larry's family. I am deeply saddened... I considered Larry as a mentor and a friend. He was my boss during my internship at Illinois Department of Insurance in 2002. He was a greater teacher and I learned a lot of him. I vividly remember the piles of documents on his desk and books/articles he suggested me read and apply in the work. As a young actuary, I was totally impressed by his tremendous amount of passion on the profession. He is definitely one of the most intelligent persons I have ever met. I recall he joked that his collection of Math books can be considered as the biggest Mathematics library between Chicago and St. Louis. Larry and I also have common interest on tennis and we played once and he beat me. On the last day of the internship, HR forgot to ask me to sign a form before my departure. Larry and Charlene drove all the way from Springfield to Bloomington to deliver the form. I never forgot that. The last time I saw Larry was in Cedar Rapids, Iowa â€“ my old employer hired Larry as a consultant. We had dinner together and talked about the old times. It is my great honor to know and work with Larry.

We will miss Larry @ tennis matches, walking with him on treadmills, drinking coffee at Paneras and just recently he asked about our son's wedding-he remembered!

The tennis community will miss Larry and his ever presence waiting for Charlene to come off the court. My condolences to Charlene and the family.

Dear Charlene & family, I am going to miss Larry. I've known him since 1976 and was one of a group from the Dept. who vacationed in London. Larry made us laugh all through the trip. All the staff at RMU were sad when Larry left and liked and respected him. I joined him and Dave for coffee last Friday at Panera and had a wonderful visit. I will always remember his happiness and laughter that day. When I asked about you, Charlene, he smiled, laughed and said you were great and loving your retirement to play tennis. I am so sorry for your loss. I was the former math instructor at Lawrence. Larry will be missed so much by the students and faculty. Larry had such a great rapport with the students and was instrumental in helping many of them get through math. It is hard to find math tutors, and Larry was a great one. He was always patient and explained things well. I always appreciated his help and I know the students enjoyed working with him. Not only that, he was such a kind, cheerful man- with a smile ready for everyone. Your loss is also the communities loss. I will miss him greatly as will the students.

Charlene: I am so so sorry and sad. I only got to know you and Larry after you both left the Department but truly enjoyed visiting with you, running with you, walking with you, hobbling with you and biking with you! Larry was fun and easy to talk to and always took time to ask about me and my family. I am so saddened by Larry's passing, and extend my deepest sympathies to his family. I was active begining in the early 1990s on many investment issues which Larry led at the NAIC. I visited him in Springfield , and appeared at the mike before the groups he chaired many times. He led the regulatory community through innumerable ground-breaking changes in their oversight responsibilities. His sense of responsibility, dedication, quick wit, quicker mind, and sense of ethics and fairness was beyond compare. He always gave every person standing before him a fair hearing, and his grasp of issues and depth of knowledge was awe-inspiring. It was an honor and a privilege to work with him.

I will never forget the many kindnesses he extended.

Larry was a tireless contributor on many topics of insurance regulation. Larry had a great depth of knowledge and his warm personality always shined through. My condolences to his family at this time.

Since retirement of 2003 from DOI, I truly got to know Larry. He was quite a guy! I especially looked forward to Panera Fridays seeing Larry, having coffee, reminiscing of working days and how happy we were just to be retired. We were happy. Larry shared so much knowledge and was such a happy go-lucky person. We always had laughter. What a guy! It just won't be the same not seeing Larry coming and going at Panera and getting emails/forwards from him. I will truly miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of loss. Larry is solely responsible for at least ten graduations from LLCC last evening. In addition to being a wonderful, caring and generous person, Larry was one of the most gifted teachers any of us has ever met. He was and is an angel. We are establishing the LLCC Larry Gorski Developmental Math Scholarship so that the legacy he began can continue forever. Larry, we miss you already and will see you again one day. Charlene, thank you for sharing him with us.

I knew Larry through his NAIC and Illinois regulatory activities. He was one of the most gifted people I ever met; extremely intelligent, an excellent communicator, a tireless worker, always willing to take the time to explain anything, and passionate about anything that he took on. Charlene, I shared many cold nights at the then-SSU Observatory with Larry and our colleagues as we began our journey into Astronomy with Charlie Schweighauser. I remember the 2 of you sharing that your honeymoon was spent in pursuit of the stars! Larry was a hard worker, loved to share ideas, and good stories, and was passionate about the stars. He truly will be missed by fellow astronomers....everywhere.

I was incredibly honored to have Larry for a boss for 10 years at the Department of Insurance and will never forgive him for leaving such big shoes to fill. He was the most intelligent and well rounded person I have ever met. Whenever I had the privilege to attend the same NAIC or other meeting as him he couldn't have been more gracious. If we traveled together he shared his views and answer questions as we went. If we traveled separately, when I got to the hotel room the red phone message light would almost always be flashing; Larry offering to walk in the evening or meet for breakfast. I was always so honored that this special man wanted to spend time with me. Finally every time I went to his office, after finding him behind the swaying stacks of paper, he would answer my question with the same patience and even eagerness every time. Thank you Larry for helping to make me who I am today.

Charlene and Family, My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very sad time. Larry was someone very special! I loved walking into the Racquet Club and seeing him there...usually reading a computer or math book. But he wasn't just about math or computers...the guy knew about everything! He enjoyed life and it showed in our discussions about the latest musicals, plays, and operas in New York & Chicago. If I ever needed a recommendation of what was worth seeing he would generously give a review that would rival the best on Broadway! He never was too busy to chat, and we will all so miss this very gentle and knowledgeable man!

Losing a loved one is always difficult, even more so when it is unexpected. Larry was a constant in Charlene's life. Nearly every time Charlene played tennis, Larry was not far behind and could always be counted upon to share his wit and humor. He will be greatly missed.

Larry will be remembered for many things. He was always at the racquet club with Charlene and supported all of us in our matches. We would see them together at the symphony and the Hoogland. He was generous with his time and talents and spoke with us about careers in actuarial science for our daughter. We will all miss Larry.

I was so sad to hear of Larry's passing. There are so many good memories to reminisce. At the Dept of Insurance I tried to support Larry with SAS programming but think he helped me more than I helped him .. and during the early 80's the Dept of Insurance had a basketball team and Larry was a very good contributor to the team .. and of course the doubles tennis matches .. Larry will be remembered and missed .. kjw ..

I first met Larry in college when he was tutoring my roommates in a math class that they were all taking together. No only was he an effective teacher but an enthusiastic one too. We in Chicago were fortunate that he started his career with the Department in Chicago as an examiner, for we got to know him personally and professionally. Whatever Larry got involved in he was passionate about it. When he moved to Springfield he helped lift the Department to national recognition with his vast knowledge and contributions to the regulation of the insurance industry. At the same time he continued to advise and support the actuarial examination staff in Chicago, for which I will always be grateful. Whenever he came to Chicago for a conference or seminar he would stop by our offices (after going to a bookstore) and tell us stories or humorous anecdotes. Larry we will miss you.

I knew Larry for 31 years. Worked together; played basketball with him on the old DOI team - he could shoot the long ones; and on paper Larry reported to me for 7 years. In reality he just knew what he was doing and did it - I only observed. What a diverse and facsinating person, colleague and friend who will be sorely missed by the world.

Charlene, you have my sympathy and pray for the loss of Larry. I knew Larry for a long time and he was a very nice and good guy. For sure, he kept the cleanest desk at the DOI.

Dear Charlene: I was deeply shocked and saddened by Larry's very untimely death. Unfair comes to mind but who will listen to that complaint. larry lived 3 houses away from me in chicago growing up we did everything together going to school,riding bikes playing baseball in the field in front of my house of course we had to beg his mom to let him cross the alley so he could play baseball but she always let him i have found memories of larry he will be sorely missed love you LARRY

I was saddened to hear about Larry's passing. My contacts with Larry were only on a professional level, but it was very clear what a good and caring man he was. I always admired his dedication to his job and its responsibilities. He was always fair, knowledgeable, and objective in his decisions. We definitely need more regulators like Larry! It was unfortunate for the insurane industry to see such an influential man retire, and now sad that he did not have the opportunity to enjoy many more of those retirement years. I will always have great memories of the many times that Larry and I traveled together from the Springfield airport to actuarial meetings around the country. Many people will remember Larry as the legendary actuary that he was including his ability to deal with complex issues and work with these issues until they they were resolved. However, I had the pleasure to know Larry as an honest and sincere man who enjoyed trading stories about non-business topics for hours on end while we were traveling. His interests were varied and progressive...like when he told me about using wireless computer transmissions in the 1990s, well before I could have imagined that this would be the wave of the future. But that was Larry...a guy who was forward thinking and who could be passionate about intellectually challenging things that would give most people a headache. We lost a good one in Larry.

Larry, I will miss sharing my successes and life travels with you! Larry embodied much of what I like and admire in a person: he was brilliant and had many interests, he was an outstanding teacher, he could spew forth a memo in final form that would need no editing, he had tremendous vision of the future, and he shared in the interests of those who reported to him. When I reported to Larry I viewed him as the epitome of what an actuary could be. Noone I've met since has measured up to his knowledge and passion for important actuarial issues. But I knew this would be the case when I handed him my resignation 18 years ago. Larry was a genuine, unpretentious, and adventurous person. As cranky as he could be at times, he cared about so many things. Larry, I am sorry we did not get together again! Life is already different knowing you are gone.

Larry's sudden passing was a great shock to those who worked with or for him at the Illinois Insurance Department--some of us for 30 years. Though we often could not keep up with his energy and rapidity of mind, his knowledge and experience were always helpful to the administrative and examination staffs of the department. My deep sympathy to his wife, family, and friends.

My thoughts and prayers are with Larry's family and friends because of their loss. For years I and other staffers from the Virginia Bureau of Insurance had the opportunity to work with Larry at national conferences and to experience not only his professional dedication and sense of public service but also to enjoy the company of a respectful listener and convivial comrade in arms. Since I'm two years older than Larry, I guess I can say I knew him all of his life. Larry and I played together often. This was because we lived downstairs from my grandma. Larry's mom was my mom's sister and they were very close. In the 50's relatives would come over to visit their parents (it seemed like almost every Sunday) and because we lived downstairs we, too, had company. And there were times when my grandma would take me by bus to visit Larry. (This may have been to help Larry's mom with Pat; Larry's younger sister.) Larry and I always played together and got along famously. Larry IS my favorite cousin and I am his favorite cousin. I guess his sporting skills overcame the 2 year difference in our ages because I was in no way better than Larry in baseball and football. We always had fun and enjoyed each other's company. I guess I was more fun to play with than his two sisters. (Donna wasn't around then). I too can say Larry made my life more enjoyable.

I knew Larry as Santa. When my family was generously invited to celebrate Christmas with the Berry/Gorski family, we were entertained by a visit from Santa. We were happy to be included in such a lively, intelligent group who loved their children. We hope you, Larry's family, find peace in his death. I'm sure he wouldn't want you to be sad. Larry I worked with you on Illinois Blues early in your career - roughly 1980. It has been a joy to watch your progress to FSA and NAIC awards. You contributed much to the profession and insurance industry with your energy and intellect. I'll miss my peaks into your professional life when the newsletters come.

Larry was of great comfort to us while his lifetime buddy...and father to us, Robert (a.k.a. Bob...Goss) was struggling near the end of his life December 2008. Larry was loyal to Bob throughout that horrific month by visiting him almost every day and spending time with him at the hospital. I was glad to have met Larry January 2009 and was saddened to hear of his passing. Our condolences to his wife and family...
