

Marvin was born June 19, 1924, in Waverly, the son of Edward and Myrtle Colvin Farmer. He
married Mary Cadagin at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield on October
14, 1950; they celebrated their 71st anniversary in October.
Marvin was a graduate of Waverly High School and Brown’s Business College. He joined the
U.S Army at age 17 and proudly served his country during World War II for more than three
years. As a combat infantryman, he was one of the first troops in Germany before the Battle of
the Bulge. Marvin was awarded three bronze stars, including one for bravery, and many other
medals. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, and a former
choir member, and was active in the Knights of Columbus Council #364 and the American
Legion. Marvin was named Springfield Irishman of the Year and was a member of the Waverly
High School Hall of Fame. He retired from the State of Illinois in 1988 after 30 years of service.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Opal and Irene Ratliff and Helen Harris;
and infant grandson, Timothy Farmer.
He is survived by his wife Mary; one daughter, Maureen Farmer of Springfield; four sons,
Robert (Kathy) of Waconia, MN, Michael (MaryBeth), John (Sarah Pratt), and Terry (Sandy)
Farmer, all of Springfield; ten grandchildren, Clare (Brian Atlas) and John (Sara) Zimmerman,
Katie (Jim) Farmer Medcalf and Valerie (Julio) Farmer Rausseo, Nicholas (Liz Paunicka)
Farmer, Thomas (Lexi), David (fiancée Ali Coffey), and Michael Farmer, and Daniel (Megan
Unger) Farmer and Mathew Robinson; great-grandchildren; Norah Zimmerman, Theo Rausseo,
and Jack and Elliot Farmer, and one due in June 2022; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and
cousins.
The family would especially like to thank Angel and Cortez, who took such wonderful care of
Marvin during the past two challenging years.
Visitation and Funeral Mass: The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on
Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at St, Agnes Catholic Church, 245 Amos Ave., Springfield, IL. A
Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. with the Very Reverend Daniel Bergbower, V.F. Illinois
COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings.
Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at Camp Butler National
Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County
and the Department of Defense.
