Born February 13, 1947 in Igloo, South Dakota, to John B. and Virginia Sweeney, Mary Ann leaves her husband of 40 years, John Merano Jr., her son, Michael, grandson, Elijah Stephens-Merano, and sister, Michele Sweeney, and a myriad of friends who loved her dearly.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, brothers John and James, and sisters Sharon and Katie.
Mary Ann graduated from Alleman High School in Rock Island, Illinois, and Northern Illinois University. She was employed by Rock Island Arsenal, Horace Mann Insurance in Springfield, Illinois and the Illinois State Board of Education for over 25 years. She was an officer with the American Association of University Women (AAUW), vigorously supporting their efforts to expand the career interests of girls through the Horizons program.
Mary Ann provided laughter for all. She had an amazing wit and a repertoire of sayings that will be remembered fondly. She was direct, her memory was long, her organizational and research skills amazing, and her loyalty was true. Mary Ann was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be sorely missed.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen, Springfield. Per her wishes, cremation rites were accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
