

Millard Douglas Rogers, 85, of Springfield, died at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. Doug was born on November 2, 1920 in Hillsboro, the son of Elmer Douglas and Ella Kirtley Rogers. He married Mary Reagan in Springfield. As a U.S. Army Veteran, Doug was proud of having served his country. He served in WW II from 1942 until 1945. He received numerous honors including the EAME Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. He performed duties in the Mediterranean Theater and on the European Continent as a machine gunner, giving support to the riflemen at Anzio, Southern France and in the Rhineland War. He was wounded in Germany and was the first gunner to use the light 30-caliber machine gun. A lifelong resident of Springfield, he worked at Pillsbury Mill, retiring after forty years of service. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Doug will be remembered as a very good hearted and honest gentleman. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Mary Root; two brothers: Gilbert “Coleman” Rogers and James Rogers and one nephew Douglas Rogers. He is survived by his wife: Mary Rogers of Springfield; one sister: Emma R. Rogers of New Berlin; five nieces and two nephews. Funeral Ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 25, 2006 at McCullough-Delaney and Butler Funeral Home, 714 E. Gibson St., New Berlin, with Scott Brindley officiating. Burial will follow in Woodwreath Cemetery, Island Grove Township, Sangamon County, Illinois, where the American Legion Post #475 will perform military honors. The family of Millard “Doug” Douglas Rogers is being served by McCullough-Delaney and Butler Funeral Home, New Berlin.
