Nancy Elizabeth Pocklington

Nancy Elizabeth Dow Pocklington, 83, of Carlinville, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2017, at Pleasant Hill Village in Girard. Nancy was born September 3, 1934 in Carlinville to George William and Ruby Grace Goad Denby. After graduating from Blackburn College, she began her teaching career and retired from the Carlinville School District after 27 years of service. She was preceded in death by her first husband William Paul Dow in 1962; her sisters Marilyn Johnston, Lucille Pocklington and Virginia Pressler Leach; and her second husband, Irvin Pocklington in 2014. In 1983 she married Irvin Pocklington, and together they became very active in the American Iris Society and helped to found the Sangamon Valley Iris Society. For this work in 1994 they were awarded the Distinguished Service Medal of the AIS at the national convention in Portland, OR. They also greatly enjoyed travel. With their friends Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Mudd (Dupo, IL) they traveled domestically and internationally, including destinations such as New Zealand, Canada, Alaska and Yugoslavia. She will be greatly missed her daughter, Virginia (Michael) Self of Springfield; son Paul (Diane) Dow of Sherman; step daughters, Susan Shedis of Brookfield, IL, Martha (Arthur) Muirhead of Clifton, VA, Judith Coles of Kansas City, MO; step son, William (Robin) Pocklington of Girard; grandchildren, Nicholas Dow and Danielle Dow; step grandchildren, Sara Howard, David Muirhead, Abby Coles, Amy Aguiar, Matthew Coles, Betsy Todd, Bonnie Grotjan, Kelly Stowell, Wendy Pocklington; four great grandchildren; sister, Jean (Melvin) Manis of Ann Arbor, MI; several nieces and nephews.Cremation rites will be accorded by Cremation Services of Central Illinois, Chatham. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2pm until the time of the service at 3:30pm, Saturday, November 4, at Sangamon Prairie Reception Center, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, IL, 62629.
