Pauline (Vignali) Murray, 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. She was born on May 11, 1933, in Sherman, Illinois, to Nello Vignali and Mary (Mariconi) Vignali. Pauline was a proud descendant of Italian heritage and was the oldest living resident of original Sherman – the four blocks. She was of the Catholic faith and worked early in her life at St. John’s Hospital.
Pauline married Harold “Hap” Murray in 1963, and they were a perfect match. She was a fabulous cook, and he appreciated it. They enjoyed going to garage sales, dining out every Friday night, trips to the riverboat, and porch sitting with family and neighbors – almost daily with her sister, Martha, and cousin, Dorothy. Hap preceded Pauline in death in 2012.
When she wasn’t cooking homemade tortellini soup, ricotta stuffed ravioli and iron pressing pizzelles, Pauline enjoyed being outside in her garden and planting flowers. She kept a meticulous yard and especially loved the spring, when her dogwood and magnolia trees were in bloom.
Everyone who knew Pauline described her as a “sweetie” with an infectious smile. She was an extremely caring mother, devoted wife, and loyal friend. Pauline spread happiness daily. Heaven is now a little brighter.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, William “Willie” Vignali; and two sisters. Survivors include two daughters; and one grandson.
As we respect her wishes, there will be no funeral visitation. A private burial will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sherman Athletic Club, in recognition of her brother, one of the founders.
The family is being served by Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.
