

Peter was born on February 28, 1944, in Springfield, the son of Paul and Frances (Bleser) Westenberger.
Peter proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and upon his return worked as a purchasing agent. Peter was a member of the Prop Club for many years and enjoyed his time working with Junior Achievement. He was always at his children’s sports events and helped coach his daughter’s softball teams. Peter enjoyed reading, especially military history books, and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gloria Casson; infant brothers, Paul J and Richard Westenberger; granddaughter, Laken Cumby; and a nephew, Jack Casson.
Peter is survived by his daughters, Angie Cumby of Springfield and Michelle (Clete) Hunter-Thompson of St. George, UT; grandson, Staff Sgt. Cole (Sarah) Cumby of Fort Campbell, KY; many nieces and nephews; and those that became family to him at the Illinois Veterans Home.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Monday, February 8, 2021, at Butler Funeral Home - Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield, IL. A memorial ceremony will follow at 11:00 a.m. Due to COVID restrictions there will be limited capacity.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
