Phil was born to the late Maria (Giallombardo) and Vincenzo Madonia on October 9, 1935. He graduated from Cathedral Boys’ High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from University of Illinois and master’s degrees in political science and public administration from Sangamon State University.
He was a loving husband to Kathleen (Kathy) Gorman, whom he married on July 29, 1961, in Dixon, IL. He was a devoted father to their five children: David (Shelley) Madonia of San Antonio, TX, Betsy (Eric) Sidor of Algonquin, IL, Suzi Madonia of Springfield, IL, Julie Madonia of Springfield, IL, and Mark (Mindy) Madonia of Chatham, IL. He was loving grandfather to his three grandkids, Greg and Jeff Sidor, and Isabella Madonia, and a caring brother to Joseph (Sharon) and Sam (Mary Jane) Madonia, both of Springfield.
Phil was proceeded in death by his parents; brother, Andrea; sister, Rosalia Zito; brother-in-law, Sam Zito; and sisters-in-law, Sharon Madonia and Judy Madonia.
While at the University of Illinois, Phil met his soulmate, Kathy, and shared 64 years of marriage and 69 years together. Kathy was the love of Phil’s life and even as his memory faded, his devotion to her never did. Family was central to Phil’s life, and he valued time spent together at church, around the dinner table, and during holidays.
Phil’s love for the University of Illinois remained strong throughout his life and was a source of great pride and joy. He served his country in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960, before returning to Illinois to begin a long and meaningful career with the State of Illinois. He worked for 30 years as a civil engineer with the Department of Transportation, where he was dedicated to improving traffic safety and public welfare. He retired in 1991 as Bureau Chief for Traffic Safety.
An avid golfer, Phil enjoyed the game throughout his life and shared his passion with family and friends. He also loved traveling, especially family trips and adventures shared with Kathy. Phil had a lifelong fondness for dogs, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He believed strongly in giving back to his community. He volunteered at St. Martin De Porres and as a Samaritan at St. John’s Hospital, offering his time, kindness, and compassion to others.
Phil will be remembered for his deep love for his wife and family, integrity, loyalty, and passion for golf. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the example he set for those who knew him.
