surrounded by family after a long heroic journey of Alzheimer's.
Philip was born on December 18, 1928 in Decatur, IL, the son of William T. and Katherine
O'Donnell McFadden. He married Ilda Eileen Bethel on June 30, 1962 at St. Agnes
Catholic Church in Springfield.
Phil attended St. Teresa and Stephen Decatur High School during which he earned the
honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. He earned his bachelor's degree in business from
Millikin University. While at Millikin University he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi
Fraternity. Phil lettered in football and basketball through his high school and college
careers. He was recruited by the Chicago Bears, but declined the offer in order to serve
his country in the United Sates Army.
Phil was involved in property management and commercial real estate in
Springfield since the 1950s. Originally, he moved to Springfield in 1954 to open a
satellite office of his family's Decatur business, Mcfadden Stationary Store, a successful
camera and stationary store. While opening, managing, and operating the family
business he decided to explore the real estate business and began to manage and
lease several multi-family communities and residential properties in Springfield. With
that success he explored the commercial market. He not only managed property for the
Knox-O'Brien Family Estate, but also the closely held commercial trust properties of
the Hicox Family Estate and the Myers Brothers Family Estate. With this success, Phil
founded and became the sole owner of Philip D. McFadden & Associates in 1962,
acquiring several commercial properties through the years to provide a full range of
commercial real estate services to the Central Illinois region. He sought to provide the
finest in full service commercial real estate property management, leasing and
brokerage services through his forty plus year tenures.
The Springfield Downtown Business District has always been important and a main
focus to Phil. Phil had weathered the economic turns through the years and always did
what he could to retain and maintain his tenants. He was a big supporter of many
downtown organizations and in fact held various positions on their board of directors to
help ensure the continuance of Springfield's downtown success. On any given day you
could see Phil "walking" the downtown streets personally attending to his tenants and
his downtown business associates. He believed in the personal approach and
making sure his tenants and downtown community were taken care of. Phil treated
everyone the way he wanted to be treated. He supported the success of all businesses
of the Springfield Community.
Phil was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, Island Bay Yacht Club-Admiralty
Class Member, The Sangamo Club, Springfield Art Association, lifetime member and
past Board President of the Springfield YMCA.
He is survived by his wife of almost 58 beautiful years, Ilda E. McFadden of Springfield;
one son, Thomas B. McFadden of Springfield; one daughter, Katherine McFadden
Chapin of Springfield; one grandchild, Sean Patrick McFadden Chapin of San
Francisco, CA; sisters-in-law, Dorothy J. McFadden of Decatur; Nellye M. (Robert)
Briggs of Springfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary Lou McFadden; and
brothers, William Thomas, Jr and Robert John McFadden.
Phil was very proud of his Irish ancestry and traveled to Ireland several times including
when Springfield was named Kilarney's Sister City. His greatest passion was being a
loving devoted husband, Pop and GrandPop to his family. Phil was the "Irish Rock" of
the family, bearing big Irish shoulders, and always putting his family first.
