

Richard A. Burmeister, 97, of Springfield, died at 7:20 a.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at St. John’s Hospital Hospice. Richard was born March 27, 1910 in Chester, IL the son of Arthur and Blanche Steber Burmeister. He married Leota J. Hughes in 1934, she preceded him in death in 1994. He was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Richard worked on the CIM Railroad during WWII, and was employed by the State of Illinois - Secretary of State’s Office from 1935 until his retirement as a supervisor in 1972. He loved gardening, traveling, bowling and fishing. He was a member of the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception for over seventy years. He is survived by four sons: Dick, Charles (wife, Joan) and Bob (wife, Beverly) all of Springfield, and Jim (wife, Marian) of Riverton; four daughters: Mary Evelyn (Mike) Flynn of Jacksonville, Julia Patel of Wooddale, Cathy (Richard) Glatz of Manchester, MO and Jane Burmeister of Springfield; twenty-five grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. There will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 3, 2007 at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, 524 E. Lawrence, Springfield with Rev. Christopher House celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, 251 Post Street, Suite 600, San Francisco, CA 94108.
