Rita Spitz

Rita Spitz, 91, of Springfield, passed away at 12:50 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016 at St. John's Hospice. Rita was born on July 22, 1925 in Belleville, IL, the daughter of Grover and Gertrude Voss Altrogge. She married Richard S. Spitz on November 6, 1948 in Mattoon, IL. He preceded her in death on January 23, 2015. Rita graduated from Mattoon High School in 1943. She was a parishioner of St. Agnes Catholic Church and volunteered her time at both Springfield hospitals for over 20 years. Rita loved spending time with her family. She also enjoyed collecting butterflies, because a butterfly made a surprise visit, coming out of her Christmas tree one New Year's Eve while a large group of friends were present. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, Robert and Julian Altrogge. Rita is survived by her children, Martin (Ann) Spitz of Brownsburg, IN, Paul (Cathy) Spitz of Bloomington, IL, Thomas (Diane) Spitz of Nixa, MO, and Cynthia (Duane) Rowe of Lakewood, CO; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL 62703. The visitation will begin with a prayer service. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 16, 2016 at St. Agnes Catholic Church with Rev. Robert J. Jallas officiating.
