Robert Lee Stapleton

Robert Lee Stapleton, 73, a resident of New Berlin for most of his life, died at 6:22 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2006 at St. John’s Hospital. Robert was born on September 20, 1932 in New Berlin, the son of Leo B. and Catherine R. Gebhart Stapleton. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Berlin. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran serving in the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 743 in New Berlin, V.F. W. Post 1379 in Jacksonville and Knights of Columbus Council 4372 in New Berlin. Robert was a very kind person and loyal to his friends. He loved New Berlin. He retired from private business. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by two sons: Brian L. Stapleton of Arlington, VA and Mark T. Stapleton of Springfield; one daughter, Kathleen I. Stapleton of Baltimore, MD; two grandchildren: Jacob M. Stapleton of Chatham and Nicole K. Stapleton of Auburn; two sisters: Elizabeth (husband, James) Casey of Humble, TX and Ann Stapleton Merrit of Frederick, MD; two aunts, many nieces, nephews and cousins and many friends in New Berlin. The family welcomes friends to visit from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2006 at McCullough – Delaney and Butler Funeral Home, 714 E. Gibson St., New Berlin. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2006 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 404 E. Birch St., New Berlin with Rev. Angel Sierra, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
