

He was born on Nov. 29, 1937 in Glenarm, IL, the son of the late Martin and Linda (Pihlaja) Murphy..
Mr. Murphy worked at the DMV for the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, was a teacher for many years throughout the Springfield area, and also owned the Gallery. He was a member of the Eagle’s Club and of the Numismatic Coin Club. He had been a member at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
He is survived by 4 children, Matthew F. Murphy of Springfield, Kathryn Amanda Murphy of Wood River, IL, David Murphy of Springfield, and Linda Murphy of Springfield; 4 grandchildren, Elijah M. Gibson of Chicago, IL, Howard C. Gibson, Jr. of Chicago, IL, Elizabeth A. Gibson of Chicago, IL, and Marley S. Murphy of Wood River, IL. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson Nathan Schmidt, and a brother Edward J. Murphy.
Services are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen, Springfield. Graveside funeral services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013 at 2 pm at Camp Butler National Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Interveterans’ Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the U.S. Army. Folowing the services, Mr. Murphy's family would like all their relatives and friends to join them for a luncheon at the Eagle's Club, 2700 E. Ash St., Springfield. Food donations are welcome.
