

Sam was born in Springfield, IL on July 18, 1933. He was the first son of the late Samuel W. and Mabel Preckwinkle Montgomery.
Sam graduated from Springfield High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the Operating Engineers Local #965. He had a green thumb when it came to vegetable gardening, and many were lucky to receive his bumper crop of homegrown tomatoes. Sam learned the art of making peanut brittle from his mother and carried on the tradition for many years. He was a loyal Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan, and one of his favorite pastimes was visiting with friends on Sunday evenings at Gabatoni’s.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Tom Montgomery and sister, Carole Oggero.
Sam is survived by his brother, Jim Montgomery, and his wife, Jan of Pleasant Plains; sister, Janie Montgomery Helmis of Yardley, PA; and sister-in-law, Treva Montgomery of Springfield. He was “Uncle Sam” to many nieces and nephews.
Graveside Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2022, at Calvary Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Department of Defense.
