Born on Valentine’s Day in 1938, Sandra, or Dr B. as she was known to many, spent most of her life in Springfield, Illinois, where she built a legacy of compassion, service, and dedication to others. A board-certified pediatrician, Sandra devoted her life to the care of children and the well-being of families across generations. She co-founded a pediatric practice alongside Dr. Wallace and Dr. Soler, which grew to become the largest pediatric office in Springfield, Illinois—a testament to her vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to her community.
Additionally, she served on the DCFS stress team, lending her expertise and experience to the review of child abuse and neglect cases.
Sandra also served as a professor at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, where she mentored and trained countless future physicians. Sandra also worked at the Springfield Department of Public Health Well-Child Clinic performing physicals and childcare to Springfield area residents, while also providing medical students, interns and pediatric residents expert experience with children and families.
Sandra did not let retirement from her pediatric practice slow her down. After retiring she worked for Social Security providing medical review and analysis of disability requests. Sandra continued to work sharing her medical knowledge and experience until the age of 85.
Her influence extended far beyond the exam room and classroom, as she was known for her kindness, generosity, and readiness to help anyone in need.
She is survived by her loving children: Beth Evans-Berning, Matthew Bilinsky (Kim), and Cara Blair (Tom). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Anthony Evans, Amy Evans, Stephanie Bilinsky, Katlyn Bilinsky, Jackson Blair, and Caroline Blair. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Talia, Talon, Thea, and Trey Evans, and Kaylee and Kelsey Cowhick.
Sandra’s life was one of purpose, compassion, and quiet strength. She touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In lieu of flowers and a service, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, in honor of Sandra’s lifelong dedication to caring for children.
The family is being served by Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 S. Grand Ave. W., Springfield.
