Sherman R. Smith, Sr., 74, of Springfield, died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, November 27, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center. Sherman was born February 24, 1930 in Springfield the son of Sherman T. Jr. and Helen Durr Smith. He married Vivian Joan Long on September 6, 1959 in Mt. Auburn. Mr. Smith was a 1949 graduate of Springfield High School. He was employed by the Secretary of State, Physical Services Department; he retired in 1991. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Joan of Springfield; three children, Sherman R. Smith, Jr. of Springfield, Dawn (husband, Brian) Brackett of Divernon, Michael (wife, Kimberly) Smith of Athens; three grandchildren, Brady and Cooper Smith of Athens and Harrison Brackett of Divernon. Cremation will be accorded by the Cremation Tribute Center. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Rev. Peter Wehrly.
