

Shirley L. “Sug” Yates, 64, of Springfield, died at 12:02 p.m. Friday, August 6, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center. Shirley was born December 11, 1939 in Springfield the daughter of John F. and Mary Skaggs Yates. Ms. Yates was employed by the State of Illinois Secretary of State retiring in 1994 after 30 years of service. She was a member of Kumler United Methodist Church, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), AFSCME and the Better Breather’s Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters: Juanita Yates, Daisy Milburn, Sidney Peet, Delores Strode and Darlene Johnson and one brother: Burton Yates. She is survived by one son: Robert (wife, Carolyn) Yates of Springfield; four grandchildren, Tyler, Cassidy, Evan and Audrey all of Springfield; one sister: Fernola Strode of Cantrall; four brothers: Harry F. Yates of Springfield, William “Bill” (wife, Elna) Yates of Apple Valley, CA, John R. Yates of Jacksonville, Richard J. (wife, Jane) Yates of Springfield and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. Family will receive friends from 5-8:00 p.m. Monday, August 9, 2004 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Dr. Roosevelt Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
