Sr. Mary Maurer, O.S.U.

Sister Mary Maurer, OS.U. died Monday, May 19, 2003 at the Ursuline Infirmary in Alton. Sr. Mary was born December 18, 1922 in Springfield the daughter of Leonard Anthony and Julia O’Connor Maurer. In 1942 she made her vows as an Ursuline Sister. She received a Bachelor’s Degree from DePaul University in Chicago in 1958 and an additional degree from Webster University in religious Studies in 1968. During her many years of teaching, Sr. Mary taught in both elementary and high schools in Springfield, Decatur and Oak Park in Illinois and in Arnold and St. Mary’s in Missouri. She was Principal of Corpus Christ Elementary School in Jennings, MO as well as Ascension Parish School in Oak Park, IL. Her longest assignment from 1975-1987 was catechetical work in a number of parishes in rural Missouri around St. Mary’s. She joined the Ursuline Queen of Peace Infirmary in Alton in April 2001. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Leonard. She is survived by her sister, also an Ursuline Nun, Sister Marcella Maurer O.S.U. and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call at the Ursuline Convent Chapel from 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2003. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. at the Ursuline Convent Chapel. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
