

Stan was born on July 28, 1938, in Freeport, the son of Grover and Ethel Jennings Papp. He married Sally Trainor on November 23, 1967, in Springfield. She preceded him in death on October 10, 2015. Stan then married Barbara Heine on July 30, 2016, in Springfield.
He graduated from Springfield High School in 1956 and then attended Eastern University where he ran track and earned his master’s degree in Public Health. Stan proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked for the State of Illinois in the Mental Health Department until his retirement. Stan liked to volunteer at the Abraham Lincoln Museum and was a member of the Shriners in Springfield. He enjoyed world traveling, swimming, dancing, and playing the trombone in the Shriners band. Stan and his family found humor in Stan’s sports rivalries with both Sally and Barb. He was a Cardinals fan and Barb rooted for the Cubs. Stan was a Fighting Illini fan and Sally cheered on the Arizona Wildcats.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Stan is survived by his wife, Barb Papp; son, David (Jennifer Hanslick) Papp; daughter, Beth (Tony Jiannoni) Hilligoss; and two grandchildren, Marie and Kate Hanslick-Papp.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield. Masonic Rites will be held at 4:00 p.m.
Memorial Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 S. Walnut St., Springfield, IL 62704, with The Rev. Dr. Blythe Denham Kieffer officiating.
A private burial will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
