Susan Conavay Schmidt

Susan Conavay Schmidt, 73, of Springfield, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at St. John's Hospital. Susan was born on March 26, 1935, in Springfield, IL, the daughter of John and Mary Davis Conavay. She married Phillip Schmidt on November 27, 1957 at Clementine Memorial Presbyterian Church. Susan graduated with the Lanphier Class of 1953 then went on to obtain her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Illinois State University. She taught 5th and 6th grade at Enos School from 1957-1964 and also worked for the Regional Superintendent of Schools as the film librarian for more than 20 years. Susan loved spending time with her family, especially her grandson. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband, which often included visiting lighthouses. She was an avid reader of true crime books, an outstanding cook, and enjoyed working in her yard. Preceding Susan in death were her parents, John and Mary Conavay. She is survived by her husband, Phil; her son, John P. (wife, Robin) Schmidt of Springfield; her grandson, John Phillip Schmidt II; two brother-in-laws, Eric (wife, Joanne) Schmidt of Springfield and Paul Schmidt of Springfield; as well as several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL 62703. A funeral ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 28, 2008 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home with Dr. Roger Rominger officiating. Burial will follow at Old Salem Cemetery at Gardner Township.
