

Thomas A. Wiss, MD, 58, of Springfield, died peacefully on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Memorial Medical Center after a courageous twelve year battle with cancer. The son of A.J. and Betty Haverfield Wiss, Tom was born July 18, 1950 in Pana, Illinois. On June 24, 1981, he married Gail M. Frantell in Cozumel, Mexico. They had two children, Emily C. Wiss of Chicago and Paul J. Wiss of Springfield. Tom, a graduate of Decatur School of Nursing, served as a nurse in the United States Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey during the Vietnam War. He continued his career in medicine, graduating from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 1982. Upon the completion of his residency in internal medicine, Tom worked for a year as an Emergency Room physician at St. John's Hospital before joining Capitol Healthcare SC, where he practiced general internal medicine for more than twenty years. A talented and respected physician, Tom loved his work. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the IL State Medical Society, the Sangamon County Medical Society and the American Society of Internal Medicine. A kind spirit, Tom was genuinely devoted to the patients for whom he cared. He will be deeply missed by them and his colleagues. Adept with his hands, Tom was a talented woodworker and craftsman. He enjoyed working in his garden and was a generous and gracious host when cooking for his family and friends. Tom was a member of Panther Creek Country Club, where he golfed, and was an active member of Christ the King Parish. His parents, A.J. and Betty Haverfield Wiss, preceded Tom in death. He is survived by his devoted wife, Gail; his adoring children, Emily and Paul; his siblings, Mary Kay Isacson of Cincinnati, OH, A.J. (wife, Sandie) Wiss of Pana, Linda (husband, Don) Dust of Assumption, and Jan LaBounty (husband, Ed Spann) of Springfield; his aunt, Eileen Bleyer of Marion; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends. All those who knew and loved him will profoundly miss Tom. Family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Christ the King Church, 1930 Barberry Dr., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Christ the King Church with Rev. Msgr. David. S. Lantz, celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army.
