

He was born in Chicago, April 12, 1948 the son of Howard and Dorothy Rose McGregor. His parents have preceded him in death.
Vern retired after 25 years of service as a Naval Aviator with the United States Navy. He was on board the USS America and served 2 tours in Vietnam. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, and the Navy Unit Commendation.
After his military service, Vern worked for the Illinois Department of Revenue for 30 years in various management positions retiring in 2002. He then worked for 2 years with the Census Bureau.
Vern was very active in the Masonic Lodge. He was a member and past Master of the Chatham Lodge #523 AF & AM, a member of the Ansar Shrine, serving as Potentate in 2007, was a member of the Legion of Honor, serving as Commander in 2005, York Rite College, Council, Chapter and Commandry, council of Jerusalem Scottish Rite, and Springfield Court #20, Royal Order of Jesters.
He also loved the outdoors. An avid motorcyclist, he loved to ride his Harley and was a member of the Harley Owners Group “H.O.G.” He loved to golf and to work in his garden. He was a member of the Patriot Guard and was a Kentucky Colonel.
He is survived by his life partner and fiancé, Cherri Williams, two daughters; Lindsey (husband Luke) Vespa and Nicole McGregor (fiancé, Chris Lancaster) all of Springfield, two grandchildren; Joseph Maddox and Rebecca Maddox Wilson, and two sisters; Bonnie McGregor of Springfield and Diane (husband Robert) Winters of Glen Flora, WI.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. where visitation will be from 4-7 pm Tuesday January 15, 2013 with Chatham Central Lodge #523 AF&AM conducting Masonic Services following at 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at the funeral home with William Hosking officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
