

Walter C. Rieck, 86, of New Berlin died at 10:20 a.m. on Friday, January 25, 2013 at Memorial Medical Center. Walter was born December 21, 1926, the son of Carl and Minnie Walter Rieck. He was born in the same house as his father in Cartwright Township near Pleasant Plains. Walter married Shirley Smith on June 4, 1955 at St. John's Lutheran Church in New Berlin. She preceded him in death on September 16, 1995. He was a graduate of St. John's Lutheran School and New Berlin High School. Walter was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church since 1943 where he was very active in many ministries, including Sunday School Superintendent for 36 years. Walter was very active for many years with 4H, FFA, Sangamon County Rural Youth, Sangamon County Fair, volunteering and holding offices in many capacities. He was a member of the National Organizations for Spotted Swine, Shropshire Sheep and Shorthorn Cattle. He was the Superintendent of Swine for the Sangamon County Fair for 66 years. Walter retired from the Sangamon County Service Company (now Lincoln Land FS Incorporated) in 1988, serving 38 years in many capacities and winning 14 trips. He enjoyed bowling and working in his yard. Most of all, Walter enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen Rieck. He is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Mae Rieck of New Berlin, Shirley Elliott of Springfield (formerly of Loami); one nephew, Roy (Linda) Elliott of Sherman; 3 nieces, Renetta (Carter) Logue of Newmansville, Rochelle (Tim) Simpson of Momence, and Ronda (Jeff) Whitehead of Springfield; 8 great-nephews; one great-niece; several cousins; special friends, Marie Ruyle and family; his Church Family, and many friends from his Bowling Group, Sangamon County Fair, Sangamon County Rural Youth Group, many livestock groups, friends from work and many others. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 300 E Gibson Street, New Berlin, IL 62670. Additional visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church. Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran with Rev. Robert Barth officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to a Lutheran faith-based organization of the donor's choice.
