

He was born on Feb. 15, 1928 in Springfield, the son of the late Walter Albert and Catherine Theresa (Ushman) Wood. He married Ellen Elizabeth Irwin on August 13, 1950 at Farmingdale Presbyterian Church and she preceded him in death in 1987.
Mr. Wood worked as a molder at the Illinois Foundary in Springfield, Superior Brass and Aluminum Factory in E. Peoria, IL, and most recently worked as a millwright at Caterpillar in Peoria, IL. He served in the U.S. Army and was a former member of the Morton American Legion, the Petersburg VFW, and the United Auto Workers Local #974. He was of the Presbyterian faith and was active in several churches throughout his life. Both Walter and Ellen were ordained elders in the Presbyterian Church. He was a past member of the Marquette Heights Lions Club. He was also a 30 gallon donor to the American Red Cross.
He is survived by his children, Karen Elizabeth Wood of Peoria, IL, Rebecca Ellen Wood of E. Peoria, IL, and Bruce Anthony Wood of rural Pleasant Plains, IL; 3 grandchildren, Tara, Walter IV, and Jeremy; several great-grandchildren; a sister Katherine (husband Rev. Irving) Pflueger of Boynton Beach, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a son Walter Albert Wood III, his twin brother Frank Wood, and a sister Dorothy Lee.
Services are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen, Springfield, where visitation will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2015 from 4 to 7 pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 20, 2015 at 10 at the funeral home, with Rev. Lonna Lee officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield.
