William H. "Bill" Berning

William H. "Bill" Berning, 86, of Springfield, died at 11:25 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2013 at his residence. Bill was born December 26, 1926 in Springfield, the son of H. William and Gladys Dickerson Berning. He married Helen JoAnn Miller on December 31, 1954 in Springfield. She preceded him in death on April 18, 2000. Bill graduated from Springfield High School and earned his Bachelor's degree from Bradley University. He proudly served our country during World War II in the United States Navy. He was employed by Sangamo Electric for thirteen years and then went to work for the Illinois Department of Transportation from 1970 until his retirement in 1989. Bill was a member of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He was also preceded in death by his parents; son, H. William Berning; sister, Francine Berning; brother, John "Jack" Berning; and stepmother, Dorothy Baum Berning. He is survived by his son, Robert M. "Bob" (wife, Beth) Berning of Springfield; two daughters, Elizabeth "Betsy" (husband, Stephen) Monseu of Severna Park, MD and Leigh Ann Berning of Springfield; two grandsons, Nathan and Evan Monseu; two step-grandchildren, Anthony and Amy Evans; siblings, Robert Berning of Aiken, SC, Martin (wife, LaRae) Berning of Atlanta, GA, Richard (wife, Carolyn) Berning of Springfield, and Henrietta Berning of Evanston, IL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. The visitation will begin with a prayer service. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 524 E. Lawrence, Springfield with Rev. Zachary Edgar, celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
