

William L. "Bill" Roth, Sr., 81, of Ashland, passed away at 8:48 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center, surrounded by his family. Bill was born August 30, 1934 in Ashland, the son of John J. and Eula Reiser Roth. He married Elaine Lynch on January 24, 1959 in Springfield at St. Joseph's Church. Bill was a graduate of Ashland High School and attended the University of Illinois. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Bill was employed as a Toll Testman with Illinois Bell Telephone Company and was the Mayor of Ashland from 1981-1985. Bill was a humble, hard-working, family man, who was actively involved in his community as a village board member, school board member, and past president of the school board. He was a lifelong member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and spent his life serving the Church. Bill was a master woodworker and used his many talents and creativity to enrich the lives of his family and community. He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Margaret Roth, Mary Thompson, and John Roth. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Roth of Ashland, six children, Teresa Roth of Chandlerville, William L. Roth, Jr. of Springfield, Lisa (husband, Larry) Cave of Ashland, Cynthia (husband, Kevin) Quinn of Longwood, FL, Amy Roth of St. Louis, MO, and Beth (husband, Robert) Vandenbergh of Ashland; ten grandchildren, Curtis (wife, April) Cave of Ashland, Adam Cave of Georgia, Alaina (husband, Wes) Griffin of Ashland, Courtney Cave of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Connor and Merrick Quinn of Longwood, FL, Christian Roth of St. Louis, MO, Nicholas (fianc, Amanda) Vandenbergh of Tallula, and Kolby and Abigail Vandenbergh, of Ashland; three great-grandchildren, Parker and MaKinley Vandenbergh and Lilah Griffin; nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 9:00 until 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 320 North Saratoga St., Ashland. Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Charles A. Edwards, celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Augustine Cemetery with military honors.
