The family of William (Bill) H. Meyer, 90, lost the heart and center of their family, their beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather on May 30, 2022 at Springfield Memorial Hospital. Bill was born on March 18, 1932 in Quincy, Illinois to Harold Meyer and Isabel L. Bassnett Meyer. Bill married Sandra Unsell, the best wife ever, who mourns him deeply, on November 19, 1955 in Barry, Illinois.
Family was the center of Bill’s life and in addition to his wife Sandra, his survivors include his two daughters, Cathy Meyer Cunningham (of Grand Prairie, Texas) and Carole Meyer Fulcher (of Springfield, Illinois). Cathy’s family includes her spouse Blake, her daughter and Bill’s granddaughter, Kristen Cunningham Crowley and Kristen’s spouse Alex Crowley. Carole’s family includes her son, and Bill’s grandson Michael (Courtney) Fulcher and Bill’s four great-grandchildren: Brooklyn, Madison, Layton and Noah. Also his two brothers-in-law, R.J. Unsell and Larry Halstead, were a very important part of their family.
Bill was a US Navy Veteran who trained as an electrician and served as an aviation mechanic on seaplanes in the Philippines during the Korean War from 1950-1955. Those years provided him with many interesting experiences and stories to tell. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked for Illinois Bell / AT&T, where much of his career mirrored the company’s development as he proceeded over the years from installer, to taking responsibility for multiple substations in and around Springfield, and by the end of his 36 years of service to the company he was working on computer networks. Bill was an expert golfer and sought-after golf partner and he was a student of the mental aspects of the sport as well as the physical skills. His family continues to enjoy the furniture he built over the years using his woodworking skills, and his fishing prowess remains legendary with his family and friends. Bill enjoyed socializing with other members of Springfield Elks Lodge #158 for the last 57 years.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday June 3, 2022 at Springfield First United Methodist Church, 2941 South Koke Mill Road, with burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
