Betty Joyce Simmons passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 28, 2024, in Woodbridge, Virginia. She was born in Unadilla, Georgia to Luther Cornelius Holland and Annie Pearl Bowen. She is survived by her sister, Sarah Holland; sons Reginald (Gina) and Mike (Sue); five grandchildren, Ryan (Jenna), Jessica, Tyler (Kelly), Lauren (Ty) and Lindsay (Brandon); and five great-grandchildren, Nora, Alice, Nolan, Amelia, and June.
Joyce grew up in Montezuma, Georgia and is a graduate of Montezuma High School. Upon graduation, she married Second Lieutenant Bobby Simmons from Macon, Georgia. She then embarked on a whirlwind adventure where she supported her husband’s 28-year Army career, raised and nurtured her two sons, and established her own career in banking operations in Northern Virginia, where she retired in 1992.
In retirement, Joyce was able to concentrate on her favorite pastimes of traveling, shopping, Washington Commanders football, and any Florida Gator sports. But her primary joy came from spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a well-loved sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor and friend to many, but mostly she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
The funeral service will be on Tuesday, December 10 at 3:00 PM at the Old Post Chapel at Fort Myer, Virginia. Internment in Arlington National Cemetery will take place immediately following the funeral service. A reception will then follow from 4:00-6:00 PM at Patton Hall on Fort Myer, Virginia.
