Born and raised in California, Carol later made her home in Virginia, where she met her beloved husband, George Wood. Together, they built a life rooted in service, compassion, and community. Carol lovingly blended her life with George’s three children—Mary, Caroline, and David—and later, the couple welcomed two children together: Joseph and Anna-Noelle (Anna). Carol found The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints later in life and became a devoted member; her faith shaped her days and strengthened her commitment to family, service, and kindness. She treasured attending church on Sunday, where she proudly sat beside George as he played the organ.
Endowed with a natural artistic gift, Carol created work that reflected her gentle heart and thoughtful imagination. She also loved gardening, finding peace in nurturing flowers and watching her efforts blossom around her. These passions brought her peace and allowed her to nurture the world around her in yet another meaningful way.
Carol’s life was defined by her profound devotion to helping others. She earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Texas Woman’s University, and dedicated her career to working with elderly individuals and children, whose lives were touched by her warmth, patience, and strength. Her door was always open, and throughout her life, she fostered children and welcomed many foreign exchange students, giving each one a safe home filled with acceptance and care.
Carol had a deep and enduring love for animals. She found joy and comfort in their companionship, and she cared for a variety of pets who brought her great happiness. Her gentle nature and nurturing spirit extended to every creature she welcomed into her home.
She is survived by her husband George; her children Joseph Wood and Anna-Noelle Wood Routh (Devin); her stepchildren Mary Wood Morgan, Caroline Ramirez, and David Wood; her step-grandchildren Pauline, Eric Jr., Sarah, Jaclyn, and Anthony; her grandchildren Mason, Kira, Violet, and Isla; and her brother Mark. All of them will carry forward her legacy of kindness, generosity, artistry, and unwavering love.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6942 Sydenstricker Road, Springfield, VA 22152, followed by a reception at the church. A celebration of Carol’s life will continue afterwards at the Routh residence.
Carol will be remembered for her boundless compassion, her gentle spirit, her creative gifts, and the countless lives she lifted along the way. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her love will continue to guide those who knew her.
