Conchita passed away on July 24th, 2024 at the age of 90.
Conchita was born in the town of Vigo in Galicia, Spain on July 28, 1933 to Flora Rodriguez Fernandez and Eduardo Perez Grimaldes. It was a time of great hunger and hardship for her parents who had twelve children in total, only six of which survived infancy. Those were Conchita and five brothers - Eduardo, Enrique, Jesus, Fernando, and Ramon. Conchita is survived by her younger brother Ramon.
Conchita is survived by her eldest daughter Otilia (Tilin) Romero-Perez and her husband Philip Winkels, her grandsons Jose and John, and her great-granddaughters Sadie and Riley, as well as her second daughter Maria Concepcion Murphy (Conchi) and husband Sean Murphy, and her grandson Benjamin Murphy.
Soon after marrying, Conchita became a mother to her first daughter Otilia in 1958. Thrilled to be a mother and wife, she settled into her married life living alongside her beloved parents and siblings for support. After five years of marriage her then husband mentioned leaving Spain for the United Kingdom. Reluctantly, following her husband, Conchita left her parents and home behind to move to a country where she did not speak the language or know anyone. Those first several years were very tough but being conscientious and an extremely hard worker, Conchita made a home for her family that now included her second daughter, Maria, born in 1966.
Mama saved every penny she could from her low paying job to ensure that she and her daughters spent as much of their summers as possible with family in Spain. In later years, when her eldest daughter Tilin married and moved to Minnesota, the priority became visiting her growing grandsons Jose and John in Minnesota. Several years later when Conchi also moved to the US and got married and had her son Ben, Mama combined visits to include Virginia. During those visits Mama made many friends and became a beloved member of both the extended Winkels and Murphy families. Those were magical summers for all of us. Thank you Mama for all those wonderful memories and the sacrifices you made to make those experiences possible. We love you and carry you in our hearts forever - Tilin and Conchi.
Mama was energetic, colorful, and vibrant. She was a wonderful storyteller who would enhance certain parts with funny voices or extra details (usually on the rude side) to make you belly laugh. She loved to dance. Mama was kind and an impeccable dresser. She was brave and adventurous. At the age of 86, she moved from the United Kingdom to live with her daughter Conchi and family in Virginia and to be closer to her daughter Tilin and family in Minnesota. During these last five years, Mama still continued to travel to Minnesota to spend time with her great granddaughters Sadie and Riley and back to Europe to see family and explore her home country of Spain.
As per her wishes, Conchita was cremated and will have her ashes interred with her parents in Vigo, Spain at a later date in 2024. No ceremony is planned for the US.
