Fermin “Emin or Ben” was born in Tabaco Albay, Philippines on March 11, 1927, fourth of nine children to Leon and Pomposa Villar. Fermin is the last of his generation.
He is survived by his three children: son, Joseph and his wife Marlena, daughter Chona and her husband Kurt and son John and his wife Jennifer and six grandchildren:
Cameron, Nicholas Alyssa, Emma, Theodore and Bennett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alicia Cruz Villar.
Alicia was first to move to the United States to continue her medical education and petitioned for her family soon thereafter. In October of 1972, Fermin emigrated to a cold, snowy Chicago, Illinois with three young children in tow for the American Dream and better opportunities for their young family.
Although he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Philippine College of Commerce and Business Administration in Manila, Philippines, he took on any job to support his family early on. One job in a plastic warehouse where he later said he made $17 on the midnight shift. He later transitioned to the Chicago city government and settled in the hospitality field and secured jobs in auditing which was more aligned with his finance background. Of notable highlight was being employed at the famed Playboy Club Towers in downtown Chicago as a night auditor. He was invited to attend Hugh Hefner and the Playboy Club’s 25th Anniversary celebration.
In 1980, he relocated with the children to the East Coast to Alexandria, Virginia to support his sister Dr. Victorina L. Villar. Their youngest sister, Bernardita L. Villar, also lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland at the time. He enjoyed working in the hospitality sector and spent 25 years in finance and auditing capacity before his retirement from Hotel Washington.
He was deep in his Catholic faith and completed his life pilgrimage to the Holy Land when his brother, Monsignor Demetrio L. Villar celebrated his 50th Year Ordination at the Vatican.
The Villar siblings reunited to witness this incredible milestone and were invited to attend a private meeting with Pope John Paul II.
His passion for travelling around the world took him to several different countries. But his love for his family, friends and community kept him grounded.
He was an avid member of the Bicol Association. He enjoyed their outings, gatherings and especially ballroom dancing. He raised three children and was blessed with six grandchildren whom he helped care for, play with and of course, discipline like no other.
He was a simple man who had an uncomplicated approach to life. His strong work ethic, his dedication to religion, commitment to family, children and grandchildren are a testament of his character.
He will be deeply missed.
As per his wishes, he will be cremated and returned to his hometown.
